Why We Ask for Referrals for Both Partners

Why We Ask for Referrals for Both Partners

Starting fertility treatment is a big step, and at Flinders Fertility, we want to make sure everyone who matters in your journey is genuinely supported from day one — not just the person having treatment.

Both partners are our patients

When you come to us as a couple, both of you are our patients. That means both partners need the opportunity to meet our clinical team, ask questions, understand what’s ahead, and be part of the informed consent process. Fertility treatment involves decisions that affect you both, and we think it’s important that both of you have a direct relationship with our team — not just your partner.

A referral for each partner is what makes that possible. It’s how we ensure both of you are properly seen, heard, and supported throughout your treatment.

This applies to all couples, so, whether you’re a heterosexual couple or a same-sex couple, if you’re planning to have a child together and both intend to be named on the birth certificate, both partners need a referral. Both of you will sign consents, both of you will have the chance to ask questions, and both of you will be active participants in the process.

What about support partners?

We understand that not every situation is the same. If a person is attending as a support person only, and won’t be named on the Donor Conception Register or the child’s birth certificate, then only the patient having treatment needs a referral.

Our team can talk you through what applies to your situation if you’re not sure.

Getting a referral is straightforward

If you don’t already have referrals for both partners, your GP can provide these at a single appointment. It’s worth mentioning that you’ll both need referrals when you book, so you don't have to make two trips.

If you have questions about what you need before your first appointment, our friendly team is happy to help. Just give us a call on 8155 5333 or send us a message via enquire@flindersfertility.com.au.
